This weekend we’ll be travelling to London for a long weekend, and we have a special reason: the 2 reunion shows of Sugar will be on. It will be the first time we visit a show in the UK, and I wonder what to expect from the crowd. But now back to Sugar.
After Hüsker Dü broke up in 1987, Bob Mould first went solo for a while, but after a couple of years he re-emerged with a new power-trio. Copper Blue was the first release and I believe it has been Bob’s most successful album of his entire carreer. It was both critically acclaimed (NME named it Album of the Year in 1992), as well as his biggest commercial success. Allthough also a trio, the sound was quite different from the Hüskers, more radio friendly power-pop. And though I know all songs by heart and really enjoy them, if Sugar is a 8.5, then Hüsker Dü is a 10.
Having said that, side A contains only bangers, including the 1-2-3 attack of The Act We Act, A Good Idea and Changes. My favorite though is If I Can’t Change Your Mind, which Bob still plays very often in his live sets. My favorite version though is this one that my son played on the Flying-V when he was 14. I guess it’s obvious why that was the guitar I got him :-).
